Karma Coffee

A Taste For Good People.

The Project

The national sport of Sweden is probably football. We have Zlatan. In Ethiopia, it is all about running. Remember Haile Gebrselassie?

Girls Gotta Run is an organisation that invests in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities. Some of them go on to be professional athletes, but more importantly, all of them have the ability to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and enhance their personal economic opportunities. It also develops their sense of well being and personal power.

Currently, there are 15 girls in the town of Sodo that through Girls Gotta Run get education and the possibility to practice running. They are given running clothes and shoes, water bottles, and a coach that works full time helping them become better and faster runners.

We see this as a perfect project for Karma Coffee. The girls have fun and at the same time develop their independence through education. We are confident that this is a creative and modern way to build a better life for many people in Ethiopia.

For every cup of Karma Coffee, we support the Girls Gotta Run project. More specifically, our goal is to support a class of 15 runners in 2015, and we can only accomplish it together with you.

The Coffee

Our Sidama

Far away from mass produced boring coffee, we will take you back to the roots and where it all started. 2000 years ago, in the region of Caffa in Ethiopia, Mr Kaldi - a happy bearded goat herder saw his goats go bananas after eating red strange looking “fruits”. Brave Mr Kaldi also tried it and since that day he was known to have the best vibe in town. He had discovered coffee!

Our coffee is a premium Sidama that grows wild in the Ethiopian highlands at 1800 meters above sea level. It is hand picked at a small farm in the village Chuko. Esaya, our friend and man in charge, makes sure that the harvest is ecological - picking, drying, and washing the coffee beans without chemicals or heavy machinery. The process goes hand in hand with Karma Coffee’s vision of sustainable organic farming.

The art of roasting coffee beans is not simple but luckily we met Aadel. He is our friend and roastmaster, and helps us to extract the best tastes from our beans. A coffee nerd would say that our Sidama is known for its rich, full body, sweet and complex flavour, floral aroma, and a finish that is bright and soft - and we totally agree. In more simple words though, the taste of Karma Coffee’s Sidama has notes of chocolate and a variety of spices.

It is a taste for good people.

The Company

Our Idea

There are many definitions of Karma. Some people see it as religion. Others think about four armed elephants. We see it as a small good gesture, a helping hand to someone else. No expectations to get something back. It is the most rewarding feeling to do good. For us, Karma is that simple.

Everyone knows about Coffee. Some hate it but most people love it. It might be the aroma from freshly grinded coffee beans or that energetic special taste that makes your day. Nevertheless it is your best buddy in the morning and your quickest way to go from social-media conversations to IRL dating. And we love it.

However, there are many aspects surrounding coffee and doing something good. Truth be told, every year we drink a lot of low quality coffee which has the same boring taste. That is not how it should be in a country where we consume more coffee than any other place (except Finland) in the world, right?

Today, we can also see a lack of transparency and efficiency surrounding making donations to charity projects. No offense, but with today’s digital landscape and technology it must be easier to see more specifically what your goodwill is doing.

So, why not drink great coffee, and at the same time, do something good for others? We decided to create a business with a simple idea to use coffee as a tool to fund projects that makes the world a better place.

Karma Coffee is all about giving back. One cup at a time. It is a taste for good people.
